Avery Hall Dorm Reviews at UNC

Great location and perfect balance of social and quiet. I lived on the fourth floor and it was a lot of flights of stairs so that is a downside. It is a dorm that is home to many athletes so if you are a non-athlete that could be fun.

Due to the Covid 19 virus, my stay at Avery Hall on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill was quite an experience. Three weeks after classes started, 109 students tested positive and the university decided to send students home. I am a member of the cross country team, so I was allowed to stay on campus. My room mate had to move into a vacant room across the hall in order to comply with social distance rules. I will return for the second semester to the same dorm room. Avery Hall will have full capacity with students in single rooms, so there will be a greater opportunity to meet other people. The isolation from the first semester was difficult at first, but knowing that there would be additional students starting the second semester made the confinement bearable. One of the greatest advantages to live in Avery Hall is that it is really close to the Chase dining hall. It takes less than two minutes to walk to the largest food court on campus. Chase serves three meals a day, and my food plan allowed me to gain the "Freshman 15" the first semester. The semester was like no other with a limited number of students on campus. Avery Hall is located next to the field hockey field and near the baseball field and Keenan stadium. I'm sure that when there is a full campus, things will look much different in terms of the number of people out and about. One disadvantage with living in the dorm was sharing the laundry room. Someone left some bleach in the washer and it ruined a pair of pants that I had just purchased. Another problem was a limited number of working dryers that had signs on them that said, "not working, already reported." With a limited working staff on campus, repairs took longer than normal. I am excited to return to Avery Hall for the second semester. I will consider other options for next year, but have not ruled out returning to dorm life. I would highly recommend every student live in a dorm their first year on campus.
