Residence Halls Unit 3 Dorm Reviews at UC Berkeley

My experience in the Residence Halls Unit 3 has been pretty alright. Although there are times when I wish that certain amenities were better kept, I've yet to feel immensely uncomfortable or unsafe while living here.

The amenities of the residence hall were not great, many of our lounges and common areas became rooms for people and we were not even ab le to use them for the majority of the year. The bathrooms were alright but were often clogged or dirty. Only two of the showers were functional as the others did not have working shower heads or sprayed a lot. The rooms were quite small which was not great, very crowded with roommates which led to some issues.

Unit 3 dorms are bad. Not necessarily a deal breaker for the school but if you can avoid them do. Rooms are cramped, and hot. The elevator is unbelievably slow when it does work (which it often doesn't). The stairs feel a lot longer than they should. The common areas, despite how bad they are, provide a fun space.

Relatively quiet but great location, closest walking distance to most of campus and downtown. It has its own dining hall so the lines are usually quick. Old buildings but best location in my opinion. Steve Wozniak lived in my building back in the day lol

I initially applied to Blackwell, which is a lot nicer and newer compared to any of the other freshmen dorms on campus. However, I ended up with unit 3, which I heard is the oldest dorm on campus. I was pretty bummed out, but it actually was a pretty good experience. The location was right in front of campus (right next to Blackwell) and has the Bear Market and Dining Hall right downstairs. The rooms weren't different from the other units and the restrooms and common areas were fairly clean. The only downside was that there is only 1 elevator for the entire building and the laundry area is all the way downstairs in the common area.

I was housed in a building that was with Unit 3, but across the street from the building complex. It provided for a more intimate feel, with a private patio and its own parking garage underneath. The building seemed to be older than most, but was well maintained for its age. My only issue was that it was hard to meet people of other buildings under the same unit, since my dormitory was isolated from the rest of the unit. Nevertheless, I was happy with the community I had built on my own floor, and the close bonds we created with one another.
