UC Berkeleyβs Unit 1 Slottman dorm is a mini-suite that consists of two rooms, five girls, and one bathroom. Maintenance comes once a week to clean bathrooms and other basic building cleaning, providing a sanitary place for all college students to reside comfortably in. Because of the fact that I live with 4 other girls who are all a freshman as well, it creates a tight bond between us that promotes a healthy living space and environment to help us not only excel in our academic lives but our social lives as well. The comfort of having an almost mini family within my dorm has been allowing me to feel a sense of support and safety throughout my college experience. Having a close knit support group is extremely important in maintaining a healthy mental state to be able to adjust to new college life. During my first week of college, I was grappling with homesickness, intensified because of my close relationship with my parents back at home. I felt empty inside, anxious, yet excited at the same time. However, my roommates in Unit one helped me overcome my fears and worries through verbal comforting and being able to do things that I did back home to help me to lessen my feelings of homesickness. My experience within my dorm, Unit 1 Slottman, has been a particularly positive one mainly because of the close knit community that has helped me through so many obstacles, as well has provided me with an amazing college experience.
