Holmes Hall Dorm Reviews at MSU

Overall it is very nice. I like having the ability to mobile order from my own building and if maintenance is needed, they are always very quick. Though, it can be a far walk to other parts of campus. I would live in Holmes again!

I enjoy Holmes Hall: quieter than a city school but louder than some parts of campus, maintenance is quick and helpful when needed, and it is on par with the other halls on campus. Residence college living is great

I am very split on my experience in this dorm. On the one hand, there is access to two good dining halls nearby (Holmes and Akers), many study areas, and maintenance is relatively quick to respond to complaints. However, Holmes is very far away from the rest of campus (especially if you have poli sci or language classes), and there are a lot of issues with the hot water and the temperature (VERY hot in the summer).

As a Lyman Briggs student living in Holmes was very convinent to attend classes in the building. Holmes dorms are on the smaller side but it didn't bother my roommate and I. The bathroom is sufficient but the shower stall is very small. There are study lounges on every floor as well as two main ones at each end of the first floor allowing for spaces designated to studying. It was nice being in a dorm with people who were all located someone along the STEM path and have the same passion for their education and future.

I am part of the Lyman Briggs College and Holmes hall was great because many of my classes are in the building however the dorm was very old and all the way off to the east of campus so far away. If you are in Lyman briggs it is great but if you are not do not stay in Holmes Hall

I had a pretty good experience when I was at holmes. The biggest problem I had was the location. It was very much on the end of campus so it would take a long time to go to places like brody, wilson, stadium, etc. Other than that, the grab and go was very convenient and so was akers, but overall the food was not that amazing. I wouldn't mind living there again, but I wouldn't mind if I didn't get it. Suite style rooms were nice.

My overall experience at Holmes Hall was wonderful. I was able to go to classes in the building which allowed me some additional sleeping time and there were many places to study within the building. I also loved meeting my roommate that I met on the MSU Facebook page. We got along better than expected and I still talk to her to this day.

Holmes was my first MSU home! It was a good experience overall for me. It was a little difficult biking there from classes, but being in Lyman Briggs made classes much closer. I'm looking forward to future housing at MSU and to continue studying hard! I'm really lucky to move closer to the MSU library next year, so that I can study there.

There was a cockroach in the basement bathroom. Never go in there. The study rooms were pretty nice and I met a lot of people in there. Akers food is mediocre and serves the same things over and over again. Its in the middle of no where so be prepared to walk 40+ minutes each way.

Overall, I would say I had a positive experience at Holmes hall because of the community there as I was able to make a lot of good friends with similar interests. The rooms itself however didn't feel that clean and I know, from visiting other residence halls experience, that the common areas are not as nice compared to other buildings.

Holmes hall was a very comfortable place to live. The cafeteria had great food as Michigan State is known for their cafeteria food and the employees were always very kind and ready to help. Many smiling faces in the caf to make your day as well.

Holmes Hall is mostly targeted to incoming college freshmen in the Lyman Briggs college at MSU. It was built in 1965 and as such, has witnessed decades of use and wear from countless generations of students. Being the main housing option for students in the Lyman Briggs college, it also is the location for the college’s administration, has several classrooms, and a dining hall of it’s own. The staff working in the hall are also incredibly nice. This means for students in Lyman Briggs, it is very much a hub of resources. For students in different colleges at MSU, not so much. Holmes Hall also has a pest issue. There are many factors to consider when deciding where to live for a first or second year. I would recommend against Holmes Hall overall unless you’re in the Lyman Briggs College.

The suite style is super nice! I would say way better than the community bathrooms because the one bathroom is right in your room, although you have to share with your suitemates, it's still fine. The rooms are a decent size!

All the people that worked at Holmes hall were amazing as well my suit mates and roommate. However, since Holmes Hall is old there were some bugs, including cockroaches. Overall it was still a good experience, just with the occasional bug.
