East McNair Dorm Reviews at MTU

East McNair is a very interesting place. It has some pros and quite a few cons. Most of the pros are the people here, not the dorm itself. The lounge space is pretty comfortable. There's a pool table and a lot of places to hang out. The kitchenette is more like a kitchen on the first floor, but other floors get a lot less. There are some good facilities, but they are out of order often. Some times there are more washers and dryers out of order than there are functional. I have a lot of space in my room, but only the first floor has ceilings high enough to accommodate sitting up in bed. I can not speak to the experience of those on other floors. There are a lot of issues with the hall. I live on the first floor, and every floor has their own special set of problems. There is no ventilation in the bathrooms, and they get really hot and mildewy. There are a lot of mold issues because of that. The showers run very cold, and it takes a long time to get them to a remotely comfortable temperature. There are a lot of bug issues, especially spiders. They are all over the windows. The elevators are slow and shaky, it is more efficient to use the stairs.

I like East McNair because there was more of a community aspect to dorm life especially in Bastille. It is far from just about everything and the rooms are small and made of cinder blocks. McNair was literally designed to be riot-proof and living there can make you feel like a prisoner sometimes. The shower situation is less than optimal since it's just a thin curtain separating you from the rest of the bathroom. Most of the dorms have separate changing rooms. The food is pretty good there though, but the dining hall is not open on weekends.

I really enjoyed it, its a quiet place with very friendly people. Everything is kept well cleaned and the food is pretty good. I do also like the common areas where you can just chill watch tv, cook, or study.

Of the three dorms on MTU's campus, McNair is my favorite. And of the two McNairs, East is better as there are more common areas and fewer triple rooms. Also, the McNair dining hall is the best of the three dining halls on campus.

Maintenance is lacking, but the janitorial staff is amazing. It takes a couple months to receive any communication with maintenance. Due to COVID most common areas have been closed so I cannot give a informed review of it.

Of the three MTU residence halls, McNair is the quietest. And within McNair, East McNair is quieter than West McNair. McNair also has the best dining hall which has the best hours as well. It is the furthest from campus core but this is worth it for the view from the rooms and because it is so far there is much less of a chance of drunks accidentally wandering the halls.
