Jones Tower Dorm Reviews at Ohio State

Jones Tower is overall really good for a college dorm. I didn't have any issues with noise my first year, and minimal issues this year. The price you pay for Rate 1 is worth it if you get a room here. The single rooms are definitely big enough for one person to spread out in the space, and you get to make the space your own. If you don't want to be up in your room all the time but still in the building, the common area kitchen, living room, and study rooms are all good places to hang out. The bathrooms are in the rooms, and can be on the small side, but they are tolerable. The biggest issue I had with the dorm was that I had mold growing in between where the shower wall and tile in the shower met. It took me 3+ people coming to the room and several phone calls before it was removed; the first maintenance crew didn't believe me when I said it was there (I am highly allergic to it), and the person who finally removed it didn't even know that the shower wall wasn't flush against each other. My advice, look for it the second you get into your room, and be there to show them if it is there. If they tell you they won't remove it, tell them you'll call the health department. It will make you sick, do not mess around with it. The location of Jones Tower is really convenient if you are a STEM major of any variety, as the northernmost line of academic buildings are all STEM buildings. Also, if you aren't interested in the party scene, the North Campus dorms are the dorms for you. If you want to party, you can walk from North to South where the parties are, but if you are interested in staying out of that, North Campus is overall far quieter in terms of partying.

Jones Tower is a dorm with mostly single room housing. That being said, a lot of the availability in the dorm is reserved for incoming students with housing accommodations, and second year students with accommodations. In my opinion, the higher housing rate is worth it, as all of the rooms come with their own bathroom, and the dorm is centrally located on North Campus, with several STEM specific buildings less than a ten minute walk, and the Oval and Thompson aren’t too far either. However, it is easy to close yourself off in this dorm, which I don’t recommend, so during move in, don’t be afraid to say hi to your hall mates, the floor culture doesn’t create itself, students initiate that effort. I lived on a floor with an awesome culture, it was a lot of fun every once in a while to go out into the common elevator area and talk with other people about anything and everything, so I encourage anyone in this dorm to do the same on their floor. One word of warning, check your bathrooms at move in thoroughly for mold, and if you find any, submit a service request, and be adamant about it being thoroughly cleaned. I moved in last fall, and knew there was some in there, as my allergies were going crazy, but it took me a while to actually find it. It was under the lip created between the marble wall and the tile shower floor, and had made its way into the caulk on the corner closest to the shower entrance. I called maintenance, who told me it wasn’t mold, but I said I want the caulking changed anyway, because even if it isn’t mold, it’s very discolored, and that was the end of that thankfully. No matter what dorm you get into, check for mold regardless, it’s a known problem here.

My room in Jones really is my oasis. The room is big for a single. I have plenty of storage place and my own bathroom! The floor groupme helps to keep a floor of introverts connected. I am right next to the north campus gym and have 3 different dining option within a 3 minute walk! Very close to high street as well!
