Dykstra Hall was an amazing social experience for me as a first year student. I was able to meet many different characters and build long lasting friendships. Through my interactions of my fellow residents I learned how to navigate through the world and learned more about myself.

Overall, the building itself is fine, and I have no specific complaints. If you have a long walk to the bathroom that can be annoying. The building is pretty large so traffic through the elevators can get packed but its pretty rare.

Dykstra hall has the classic series of dorms. Most are triples, some are doubles, and with the occasional single room. It is a communal bathroom with the boys' restroom on one side and the girls' restroom on the other. Most first years are placed on the floors and so it is very social. The location of the dorm is very close to campus and can get to the south side of campus with in 10-12 minutes. In order to enter the dorms you need to go through the lobby and then take a staircase up with can be inconvenient at sometimes. With it being connected to the lobby it allows you to go to the De Neve dining hall without stepping outside which is convenient. The bathrooms are cleaned once a day and trash is take out throughout the day. There are days when it goes uncleaned due to lack of staffing, so it can get dirty at times. There are 6 showers and 6 toilets. The room itself is small but there is enough room to fit 3 people to live i. It comes with a desk, bed, and closet space. 2 closets are built in cabinets and the thrid one is under the lofted bed. It is also the only classic dorms that has hardwood floors which is much easier to clean than carpet.

I think its a good dorm hall. It's the closest to campus, but honestly the furthest from dining halls (except De Neve). I believe they are also the newest classic buildings and the only ones with hardwood floors. Our bathrooms are probably also the best ones!

Dykstra is a perfect place for all who love socializing. Due to this fact it can get loud at times and messy but it definitely was a fun place to connect with others and make new friends especially as a freshman.

My experience at Dykstra was short. I was only there for a summer internship but the experience was amazing. If I do end up going to the University of California Los Angeles I will be applying to stay in that building.

I lived in a small room all the way down the hall from the girl's bathroom with two lovely roommates. It was not the most comfortable situation but it was definitely rewarding. From 2 am bonding sessions with my roommates to hall runs down to Diddy Riese, it was an enjoyable experience living in the hall. I had the privilege of knowing the staff who cleaned the bathroom on our floor, and they were so kind and helpful.

When I reflect on my time in college, I always think back to my days living in Dykstra Hall! I had such a positive living experience during my first year that I actually requested to live in the building again for my second year. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!! PROS: (1) The location of Dykstra Hall is unmatched. It is so close to Bruinwalk that you cut your walking time to and from class substantially (I would estimate ~8-10 minutes in each direction, in comparison to the furthest dorm building Hedrick Hall). (2) The building is also located right above the De Neve dining hall which serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, AND Late Night, and the Grab-and-Go dining option which serves breakfast and lunch. (3) Since this dormitory building provides "classic" rooms, which can be quite small and cramped at times, students will often congregate in the floor lounge to study and socialize. I made so many new friends, many of which I still have today, based on the relationships I formed in the lounge! I feel that this factor can often be overlooked when incoming freshman decide which room option they want. If this is you, I HIGHLY recommend choosing the classic option since it forces you out of the comfort zone your room may provide into more social situations. (4) The higher floors have a great view of the city, and on a clear day you can even see the ocean. (5) The building has Access Control, which requires students to provide a BruinCard for building access after 9PM for safety precautions (not all buildings provide this service). CONS: (1) The shared bathrooms can become quite dirty at times, but this is highly dependent upon the other students living on the floor who also use the facilities. Cleaning staff do work often, but realistically they would have to clean everyday to keep the shared bathrooms at a high quality level of cleanliness. (2) Since the building facilitates such social environments, it can be loud on Thursday-Saturday nights. It is on these nights that students who need to study may need to find a quiet space on campus outside of their room.

Dykstra Hall has a great location. It is possibly the closest dorm to the general campus, the frats, and it has a dining hall right beneath it, which makes breakfast and late-night snacks easy to get. Now, the issue is that the nickname "Dirty Dykstra" stands for a reason. You will get 1-2 roommates in a small room that has dust everywhere behind/below the beds, the carpets have seen better days, and the boys bathroom had several incidents involving feces and piss -- absolutely wear bathroom sandals. The people are alright, though, and making friends is really easy cuz a) everyone is so close to one another, and b) the lounge is a popular destination. It is mostly quiet on the side facing the campus, but Thursday/Friday/Saturday nights will get loud on the side facing Westwood.

Living in Dykstra was a lot of fun, as I lived on an Living-Learning Community (LLC) floor. Because it was an LLC, however, it was much noisier than other dorms. But we quickly became a community, and dorm living was a really great experience. Dykstra is one of the closest dorms to campus, although it is one of the older buildings. If you live on the North Side on a lower floor, you don't have a great view, which is one of the only downsides. Lounges were regularly cleaned, as were the communal bathrooms. It was quite safe, as everyone needed key card access and there was late night security. Also, one of the dining halls was just downstairs.

There's no air conditioning so during the spring and beginning of summer it gets very hot and sometimes humid in the room. However, the location is perfect because it is as close to campus as you can possibly get when staying at UCLA.
