Hess Hall Dorm Reviews at UTK

I think the location of Hess Hall was great. I dont like how they took the study rooms and changed them to dorm rooms. Also to fill Brita's up we either had to go to the kitchen on floor 5 or the first floor. I wish there was one kitchen/common space on each floor. Because it was communal bathroom everyone new each other on the hall which I loved.

I stayed at Hess Hall during my freshman year. Location and distance-wise to surrounding areas, I think it was pretty great. It is really close to the library, dining hall, Starbucks, and other buildings where my main classes were located. when it comes to condition I think it could have been better since Hess is just such an old building that needs renovating. overall I don't think I would recommend it to anyone but if it's the last option I would dread it either.

Everyone works with the small space provided. It's a great way to socialize and learn how to live in a community. The staff is very friendly and always there to help. It's located right by the strip (Cumberland ave).

It was great overall. Pretty small rooms thought and communal bathrooms. Great location on campus! Sometimes on Friday and Saturday nights it can get a little loud. It's not terrible for the price considering you're right in the middle of campus.

I lived in Hess Hall for two years. While there were some challenges, it is the perfect dorm for freshmen and younger students at the university. Located right next to the library, living in Hess ensured I could make it anywhere on campus within 10 minutes. It also has a grocery store and fried chicken restaurant on the first floor. The biggest downside of Hess is the community bathrooms. They were not always the cleanest (by no fault of the maintenance staff) and there was not enough hot water for everyone. I lived on the seventh floor with 63 other girls and had to walk down to the fourth floor every night if I wanted hot water. The amenities of Hess were also nice and made up for the issues. The music room was fun to learn to play piano in and the gym was never super crowded. Overall, living in Hess was a good experience and helped me get out and explore the UT campus.

Hess was a nice place to live in. The dorms are a bit small for two people but nice if you live alone. The bathrooms are strange because they still have urinals but no guys can get to them. I feel safe because there are card readers to get into multiple areas so random people can't just walk onto your floor. I was upset that there was no kitchen on my floor or tv but the study area was still nice. Dippers and a pod market are in there so I was happy to not have to leave to get food.

Hess Hall builds character for sure. UTK's roommate matching system is great. Hess Hall was fairly clean, but maintenance would take forever to repair the community bathrooms. Most would be operational, though. Student staff is friendly. Location is the ulitmate draw due to being center of campus and next to the library.

Hess Hall is one of the cheaper dorms at the University of Tennessee and it shows. The bathrooms are poorly maintained and there is mold growing in them. The rooms are clean, which mostly relies on the residents, but other areas are very sad. The staff is friendly, but the condition of the bathrooms makes most people not want to be there.

The location is definitely the best part about living at Hess Hall. It's only a short walk from both the dining hall, Presidential Court Cafe, and the Hodges Library, making it very convenient to conduct day to day activities such as studying. Living communally means that you get to know your hall members quite well, making it easy to make friends. This could be useful seeing as Hess Hall is primarily a freshman dorm. Hess Hall is nothing special- but everything is functional, and for the most part, clean. The bathrooms are cleaned about twice a day. If something is dirty, everything is stall-styled, so I just choose a different stall. The showers are bigger in comparison to those of other universities. There was a problem with water temperature being too hot or too cold, but after complaining to the RA, the message was communicated to the Hall Director quickly, who got the problem resolved. All in all, while Hess Hall definitely isn't one of the best dorms on campus, it suffices for any first-year students looking for a cheap place to live in a good location on campus!

My experience has been that of a normal college student. You can see very odd things from time to time but it’s relatively safe and provides easy access to campus and my classes, so I can’t compliant at all.

Probably the most conveniently placed building on campus and it's close to everything. The RA is the best!!!! It does come with loft beds though. You can de-loft the beds but there is little space. You get the best view from the seventh floor.

It is a good place to live. A lot of things quit working but are usually fixed within a day or two. Sometimes it can get pretty loud, with people playing music and hanging out. As long as you keep occupied, you shouldn’t be too bothered by anything.
