Hoge hall is an engineering dorm and acts like such. Parties are far and few here, and you are much more likely to see students studying in the lounge as opposed to playing ping pong or Jackbox. It is overall a wonderful community of aspiring engineers

It's very much old. They still have popcorn ceiling. The heating only turns on when there's a certain temperature outside. Carpet floor so if someone makes a mess, the smell will linger even if the vomit has been cleaned up. The first floor is pretty quiet from my experience. The hall is divded by gender within floors so like the first 2 floors are all girls, the middle is mixed and the last 2 are all boys. The top floor of hoge is pretty rancid and noisy where there was a rumor of a certain mess in the bathroom. There's a quick walk to the main 2 food halls from hoge so that bit was fine. The shower is communal and sometimes the curtains would be ripped and hairs would be on the drain so it'll flood the floor a bit if you shower for too long.

Hoge Hall is not the best dorm at Virginia Tech, it has a lot of shortcomings: no AC, older, communal showers, limited lounge areas, questionable rug stains, etc. But, this hall shines the most when you focus on the purpose of the communities housed here. As a Hypatia resident, I was able to meet a ton of other people, and it truly did feel like a community (I'm sure many of the people in Galileo felt the same). So, it may not be the best dorm, but it sure does build character!

It might not be the best dorm on campus but it allowed to me connect with people of the same major and to create lasting relationships with them after leaving dorm life. I would not change a thing about my experience. It is about what you make out of the situation.

Hoge hall is a relatively quiet place to live and makes it a great place to study with its many various lounges and small study rooms. The residents are usually driven individuals and that makes Hoge Hall a great environment for students in difficult majors. The bathrooms are hall style so you do have to walk some distance to shower or use the restroom. This is a very safe place to live, however it is one of the farthest dorms from the academic side of campus, so you'll definitely get your steps in!

Hoge Hall is the home for students in the Galileo and Hypatia programs at Virginia Tech. The dorm is designed for the purpose of bringing different people together under a common major. During my time there, I met lots of interesting and talented people. I could not have imagined staying in a better dorm.

Hoge hall is a clean, convenient, and friendly environment where I have had nice hall mates, RA's, and janitors who cared for each others' mental health. I lived on the 1st floor specifically and the area is quiet and comfortable enough to stay to finish assignments.

Hoge Hall is the dorm for Engineering. It’s located in a nice area to where it’s a short walk to get food. There’s also faculty going around and cleaning frequently, although the bathroom showers are usually nice I constantly find these big, matted balls of hair on the drain. Personally, I didn’t mind Elevators mess up quite a lot, since it gave me a reason to use the stairs and get more exercise, but I didn’t like that the water messed up several times in the first semester so we went without water for a little while. The dorms are extremely quiet so my roommate and I have a fan. They also don’t have AC but they have heat. The higher floors get extremely hot, although in my experience the lower two floors didn’t get too hot as long as you had fans. Outside the front of Hoge Hall there’s a basket ball court, two volley ball courts, a gym area, and a large area of grass to hangout in. People are constantly utilizing these as well as the bike racks. Moving on to dining: There are plenty of places to choose from, and all of them have really good varieties of food! Hoge hall is in walking distance to four of the dining halls: Owens, Detrick (including DX and Deets), West End, and Squires. Of these there are various smaller places to eat inside. My two favorites are Pops (located in Owens) and Burger 37’ (located in Squires). My least favorites are Dish (Located in Owens) and Variabowl (also located in Owens). However there are plenty of amazing food places! Moving on to academics: Hoge is, unfortunately the building furthest from the academic buildings. On the bright side if you don’t want to walk and you have a bike you can ride or you can take one of the many busses on campus! (However almost all of the classes are currently online due to COVID-19, so I only go out for food and to one in person class a week) Overall: Hoge hall is a fairly awesome dorm. It being my first dorm experience I don’t have much to say that’s negative in comparison to the others. The campus is beautiful, and people are extremely nice. The only thing is you’re currently required to have a COVID-19 test and wear a mask. Failure to follow these equals a Student Conduct.

The dorm is very nice there. In the pictures it does not seem like there would be enough room but once you walk in there it is fine. The LLC that they have for the engineers has been helpful and I am able to expand my network easier because of it.

Being that Hoge Hall is one of the older dorms on campus, it is still in pretty good shape; however, the different types of maintenance the building went under just in the first semester was a lot. At one point that water was completely shut off in the building and if we had to go to the bathroom or shower, we had to resort to going to Pritchard or hoping a friend would allow us to come to use theirs. There was also flooding on the bottle level of the building and that wasn't the first occasion of that happening. Another downside is that there wasn't any A/C and as it got colder they waited a long time to turn the heat on and at times it was freezing.

The bathrooms and the common areas are not the cleanest, mostly because college students are not the tidiest people in the world. However, living in Hoge Hall has been otherwise very comfortable to live in. The noise level tends to be low and most people respect quiet hours. It is close to the two dining halls D2 and Owens and is near the most active quad on campus.

Hoge is not a terrible building to live with. At first, I was hesitant because there's no AC and it has communal style bathrooms. As Hoge is for engineering majors, it comes in handy because as an engineering major, who's going to have the time to clean the bathroom? It tends to get bad sometimes, and with that being said, please clean up after yourself! As for the AC, it's only hot for about two months, then it starts to get cold. Bring a circulating fan and you will be fine. I've never had an issue with the people there, in particular, most people tend to mind their business.

Very nice dorm! Full of wonderful people always ready to help one another! It’s the main home for the Galipatia community for Engineering students. Galileo is for the males, Hypatia is for the women. The elevators do break down a bit, and there have been a few plumbing issues but it’s close to some of the BEST food places on campus!
