I was in a triple dorm for my first year at Laf. The space was alright as we were not sleeping on top of each other but all the dorms are roughly the same size so if you land a double you are EXTREMELY lucky. For first years, you are not allowed to choose your housing, it is randomized but I am overall grateful for my room assignment. Out of the 5 floors of South (including the basement dorms), only the top floor is reserved for sophomores and the rest are dedicated for freshmen. Due to the newly renovated basement area will music rooms, various games such as a pool table and shuffle board, vending machines, and several study spaces, South is quite the attraction. Many freshman across campus find themselves partying in the South basement and running through the halls. I have witnessed throw up on the floor of hallways as well as multiple sinks of both of the bathrooms on my floor. The major perks of the building though is that it is one of the very few buildings with central air and let's say when the air is on, it is BLASTING which I admired. I have heard stories of so many people suffering in the heat as they could not pay for their own air conditioner unit. In addition, it has an elevator, which is extremely convenient but I have also gotten stuck in their a few times as well. It is one of the biggest buildings and luckily gets one of the most attention as our two custodians come in to clean every weekday to clean the communal bathrooms and can be called in on the weekends if there is human waste which requires immediate attention. This is a gift as some custodians only clean twice a week. Another double edged sword is that there is a washing machine room on every even floor, but somehow at least one is out of order as many first years do not know how to wash their own laundry and end up break the machines causing flooding in the hallways. Despite all these tragedies, the air is probably the most valuable perk as well as the location. It is right across from the Marquis dining hall which makes not many inconveniences. We are a two minute walk away from the quad and about a 3-4 minute walk away from the science buildings. We are practically in the middle between the only good frats on campus if you into the party scene. So, in all, South is great for social people and those willing to truly experience college. more
