Turner House Dorm Reviews at SCAD

SCAD loves to take over an old building and turn it into another one of their own properties. The Turner House residency for the school year of 2022-2023 was open to freshmen only. As I got to know some of the older students in SCAD, I came to find out that it was previously a resident hall for sophomores and up. This makes me wonder how could SCAD freshmen during their time transfer to such a place as Turner House which used to be a hotel, which you can tell it was a hotel by the design of each dorm with the AC attached to the wall and the sink and mirror facing your study space. Having the experience of sharing one entire room with two other people wasn't as bad as it sounds since there's no sense of privacy, but it does humble and prepare you for other challenges to come when having to work with your roommates to fit the best living situation for everyone.

Turner House is great for basics and simplicity, but due to its age lacks significant amounts of maintenance in areas such as water damage, dorm upkeep, elevator malfunction + failure, etc. Its common areas are also on the simpler end but can be rather fun with the right group of friends. The dorm rooms have a great space for it's maxed capacity of two students (though in the 2022-2023 year, it's been three).

Turner house was not what I expected. Turner house was advertised as a two student dorm. Due to the over admission of freshmen, Turner changed to three people per dorm. Compared to the newer housing buildings, the space was very tight. Turner is considered one of the oldest housings alongside Oglethorpe. In result, the dorms weren’t as tidy as students thought it would be.

Turner House was a unique experience for the class of 2026. We were completely overenrolled which meant that Turner House was full of triple occupancy rooms that were originally meant to be double occupancy. Since it was a renovated building, there were no study rooms for the residents, which was a huge downfall. Residents had to travel to different dorm halls or academic halls to be able to study in a study room or quiet place. Half of the floors still had high school room-type tiles covering the floors, including in the bathroom. My tub specifically had rust in it, never drained properly even with maintenance, and the shower walls were yellow from use. When I first moved in, it was like the floors were never cleaned. Bugs and hair covered the room. The redeeming qualities of Turner House was Amigos, the Mexican-style meal plan dining option, the sense of community and boding that the troubles of the dorm caused, and the bridge which provided a scenic spot to sit at any hour.

To be fair, I lived in Turner during the double occupancy, so I only had one roommate, while the year after me had to fit three to a room. However, even for two people, it is a small living space. There is only one room, which serves as your living room, bedroom and storage area. The bathroom is separate, but was still quite small. There is almost no privacy for yourself within the dorm, and the noise from the hallways will get into your room. My room was across from the staircase, and I heard everything that happened. The hall ways are covered, but it is technically outside, so there will be rather large puddles in the walkway. The laundry rooms were located in the same floor as me, but with the puddles, it was rather common to have wet socks on the way. The laundry facilities had many errors, and often some of the machines were out of order for weeks at a time. I was lucky enough to enjoy my roommate for the most part, but because the privacy was so lacking, we never got very close. It wasn't the worst option, but far from the best.

The location of this dorm is perfect. The dorm inside it's good, but the only thing is that if there are 3 people living, is a little bit unconfrotable because there's just one bathroom and not that much space. But for 2 people is perfect.

Turner house had the potential to be a great dorm, however a big factor is your roommate. My roommates were loud, messy, and inconsiderate, which drastically worsened my experience. On the other hand, a lot of my friends stayed in Turner House, and I would spend the night in their rooms sometimes, and then it was a great experience. The furniture and appliance could stand renovations, however, it isn't terrible.

With covid-19 my experience here is a bit different than what the normal experience would be. I have no roommate which is convenient because I get to use the full space which is pretty large. Also, the building is located in the midst of the city so everything is a pretty good, convenient distance from me!

Most kids complain about Turner because it is a three person per room dorm. If you are with the right people it is a very enjoyable experience. I am a film major, and it is walking distance to all the film buildings. It is also the hub of all SCAD busses, so it's hard to be late for class. Being right next to the Hive by a safe bridge is also nice. You get the benefits of the Hive outdoor area and dining without the extra expense of being a Hive resident. I am very satisfied with Turner. It can seem a little run down, but don't let that scare you away. The courtyard is gorgeous with plenty of bike racks. It also has its own restaurant that is open until 2AM with amazing mexican food! Total lifesaver for long study nights. The photo is of my roommate from the bridge that connects Turner and the Hive. There are benches there that are beautiful and peaceful to sit on at night!

I really liked living at Turner House, the people that live there are really nice and the Resident Assistants are very helpful with any questions or issues that we have. I like how there is a lot of security because it allows me to feel safe living there.

Wouldn’t have wanted to be anywhere else. I made so many friends that I will remember forever. I’m even rooming with two of them this year and I’m so excited. If you wanna make a year to remember, apply for turner house
