My experience in the Marapai dorms was honestly better than expected. Going into college dorm life, let alone community college dorm life, there is such a bad reputation around them, especially with the expectation that the facilities will be old and gross. The marapai halls are a newer complex, and though some of the room shapes and colors can be strange (like some rooms are a yellow color), there is a lot to appreciate and look forward to in these dorms. My favorite part of the complex is the rooms; they are large enough to not be completely on top of your roommate but still cozy and cute. They also have their own bathroom that you only share with your roommate, no suitemate, and no communal bathrooms. I have seen so many other dorms at larger universities, and that simple fact is such a luxury. The water is always warm with good pressure, and I never had any plumbing issues unless we were all notified of it. The facilities are also nice because there are a nice tv and plenty of common area to hang around granted, sometimes those common areas get a little dirty. After all, it's like a giant house with many college students, it's a fun place to be, and you can always find someone to talk to or go into one of the study rooms if you need to focus on your studies. Since it is like a big house and with it being coed sometimes there is noise, but the staff does a good job of trying to keep that only during respectful times so you can have fun but if you need rest, by 12 quiet hours are enforced with the staff making rounds to hear the noise. On-campus police make their rounds trying to ensure safety; they really are just there to make sure nothing bad happens. All the police are cool, and to get people in trouble to be mean, they genuinely care. With that being said, there were a couple of instances where someone needed medical attention, and because the police were there, it really helped. For the most part, the staff is also trying to make dorm life fun (as it should be) and have ping pong tables, balls, and are always doing res life events with free food and social interaction. The location is also so close to all classes, the gym, a nice running trail, and the cafeteria. The cafeteria (the rider diner) is also a bigger blessing than many colleges have. They try really hard to accommodate and have fun meal stations (especially during lunch, the cultural table was nice with different dishes like fajitas or sushi). The salad bar was always nice too and the sandwich station. Dinner wasn't always the best especially because some of the cooks didn't care, but there was an open grill, which is more than many schools have. They always had some fresh fruit, too, which was awesome. Trust me when I say this, it may not look like much, but the dorm life at Yavapai College is pretty good compared to so many places.
